Short bio
Andrzej Michalczyk is a historian of modern East Central Europe, with a research focus on Polish-German borderlands from 1800 to the present. He studied history at the University of Warsaw, obtained his PhD at the University of Erfurt (2007) and is an Associate Professor of Modern History and History of East Central Europe at the Department of History, Ruhr University Bochum (since 2007).
His research and teaching interests include social transformation, migration and mobility, politics from below, and nationalization processes in East Central Europe. His recent project focuses on a German-Polish-Czech “History of Migration from Upper Silesia, 1800 to the Present”, and takes a micro-historical, actor-centered approach to show the groundbreaking transformation around 1900 and after WWII in a larger East Central European perspective. This book will be published in April 2024.
