Convegno internazionale con il patrocinio del Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerche Queer (CIRQUE)
Nei giorni 12 e 13 dicembre 2022, a Pisa presso il Centro Congressi Le Benedettine (piazza San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno, 16), si terrà il Convegno internazionale “On other shores: Queer Counter-Narratives in Southern Europe and Mediterranean Art History, 1800-2000”, a cura di Sergio Cortesini (Università di Pisa), Francesca Gallo (Sapienza Università di Roma), e Giulia Simi (Università di Sassari), organizzato nell’ambito del progetto di Eccellenza del Dipartimento di Civiltà e Forme del Sapere, con il patrocinio del CIRQUE – Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerche Queer.
Il convegno internazionale On Other Shores prende l’espressione idiomatica Essere dell’altra sponda sia letteralmente, nel senso di essere geograficamente decentrati (nel Sud dell’Europa, e lungo le coste del Mediterraneo), sia metaforicamente, nel senso di essere eccentrici rispetto alla normatività eterosessuale.
Il convegno porta a Pisa studiose e studiosi internazionali per discutere sottotesti queer trascurati nella storiografia artistica in Italia, l’Europa del Sud o il Mediterraneo, aree considerate come custodi di una più tenace eredità patriarcale rispetto all’Europa nord-continentale o all’asse anglo-americano. Soggetti storicamente eccentrici e attraversati dal sentimento di non sentirsi a misura della normatività sessuale, di genere o fisica, dalla fine del XIX secolo hanno messo in campo strategie di dissimulazione o adattamento prima di osare forme più esplicite di contro-narrazioni dissidenti, che sono diventate più evidenti nell’arte dagli anni Settanta del XX secolo.

Essere dell’altra sponda (being on the other shore) is an idiomatic Italian expression that can be translated as “playing for the other team”. This symposium brings together international scholars investigating queer subtexts hitherto neglected in the artistic historiography of Italy, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin – that is areas commonly regarded as the guardians of a more persistent patriarchal heritage than North-Continental Europe or the Anglo-American axis. Eccentric subjects, alienated by the feeling of not fitting the measure of sexual, gender, or physical normativity, since the 19th century have developed strategies of dissimulation or adaptation before daring explicit forms of dissident counter-narratives, which became more evident from the 1970s onwards.
