English version

Project PolEmA will thoroughly analyse the interconnections, both in chronological and geographical terms, among three different regions of the Iranian lands, in order to assess which kind of organisation different political realities maintained to administer huge polycentric imperial administrations, such as the Seleucid, Arsacid and Sasanian ones (from the 3rd c. BC to the 7th c. CE). Three specific areas of interest have been chosen on the basis of their importance for all these multicentric empires during the selected timeframe, reflecting also the research focus of each unit: the historical regions of Garmegan, Syarazur and Media, encompassing several settlements, cities and communication routes of primary importance (Sapienza Unit), the fundamental area of the capital city Seleucia-Ctesiphon and its surroundings (Turin Unit), and the frontier zone of Chach, with its complex interplay of languages and cultures (Pisa Unit).
